Sophie Zurquiyah speaks during ADIPEC 2023 on the company’s long history in the Middle East and how geoscience and HPC can help achieve net-zero goals.
During an exclusive interview with Energy Connects at the recent ADIPEC 2023 show, Sophie Zurquiyah, CEO of CGG, gives her views on the energy sector from the perspective of a service company and recounts how CGG’s technology and expertise has given the energy industry in the Middle East better subsurface insight for decision-making since the 1950s. A well known example is Sercel’s high-end equipment that is currently deployed on the majority of land seismic crews in the region and its GPR300 seabed nodes will be used on major OBN surveys being conducted in the Middle East this year.
CGG also has a strong subsurface imaging presence in the region, having had a seismic imaging operation in the UAE for over 20 years and run a dedicated imaging center for PDO in Oman for nearly 30 years. Less well known is the impressive track record of its wellsite geological analysis experts who have conducted more than 800 well site projects in the region since the 1980s.
Looking ahead, after CGG’s recent 90th anniversary celebrations, Sophie outlined how the company’s geoscience expertise can help in achieving net zero goals in areas such as carbon sequestration for imaging and monitoring carbon storage sites and finding the new minerals needed for the energy transition. She also spotlighted two new business activities where CGG is leveraging its capabilities in new areas. By repurposing its expertise in industrial-scale High-Performance Computing (HPC) it now provides highly optimized, outcome-driven driven HPC-as-a-Service (HPCaaS) offerings that meet the compute-intensive needs of other high-tech industries such as biotechnology. It has also adapted its best-in-class Sercel sensors for monitoring large infrastructure, such as bridges, dams and wind-turbines, to optimize their maintenance and length of life.
